In 1994, Elizabeth Hill started an autobiographical
series titled TheAmerican Votives. Inspired by a Buddhist tradition of placing cloth blessings on tombstones,
these ¾ life-sized sculptures include handmade pieces of clothing placed on
them as tokens of healing and celebration.
Exhibitions of The
American Votives have included community celebrations, each with a parade orchestrated according to each
setting. One large work entitled The Ark of the Choirboy with The Covenant is composed of two parts, each built to be carried in procession on the shoulders of four people.
